Summary
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the composition of Santander’s GDP in order to assess the
relative performance of different sectors of the economy using a method commonly used in regional
economic research: shift-share analysis. The analysis was made for the period 2000-2007 and the
results show that the sectors of commerce, industry and business services are the ones that have
contributed the most to the growth of Santander in this period. Within the industry, the oil refining
sector and the processing of food products are those that generate more value. We also show that
social indicators and human capital of the department are above the national average.
