In this scenario, market equilibrium is not affected by a bank’s actions. In contrast, when a bank has market power, it can affect prices, which will lead to higher lending rates and lower deposit rates. In this way, part of the consumer surplus is passed to the banks and efficiency is lost through a reduction in the volume transacted on the market. Therefore, regulations to limit the creation, spread and use of market power are entirely justified. Nevertheless, the only guides to implementing such regulations in an ideal way are the empirical studies of competition that describe the characteristics of the relevant market, which is why they are so important.11 páginas : tablasPDFspaOpen AccessBancosInstituciones financierasRiesgoProbabilidadesColombiaCompetencia espacial en el mercado colombiano de depósitosWorking PaperG21 - Banks; Depository Institutions; Micro Finance Institutions; MortgagesG29 - Financial Institutions and Services: OtherE44 - Financial Markets and the MacroeconomyBanksFinancial institutionsRiskProbabilitiesColombiaMercado bancario -- ColombiaCompetencia bancaria -- ColombiaIntermediación financiera -- ColombiaAcceso abiertoAtribucion-NoComercial-CompartirIgual CC BY-NC-SA 4.0G21 - Bancos; Instituciones de depósito; Instituciones Microfinancieras; HipotecasG29 - Instituciones y servicios financieros: OtrosE44 - Mercados financieros y macroeconomíaLas opiniones contenidas en el presente documento son responsabilidad exclusiva de los autores y no comprometen al Banco de la República ni a su Junta Directiva.https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12134/2073
